A Job for Every Pocket
Thirteen compartments, each with one job. Watch the CARGO get packed pocket by pocket, then see where everything goes.
A backpack with lots of pockets sounds like the cure for a bag that swallows your keys. It only works when every pocket has a job. Thirteen pockets with no plan are just thirteen places to search.
The CARGO 48L was laid out the other way around. Each of its thirteen zippered compartments was given one job before anything went in it. The video below packs the bag one compartment at a time. Tap any step to jump straight to it.
Why Pocket Count Alone Misses the Point
Most bags with many compartments still fail the same test. You know the charger is in there somewhere, so you open three zippers to find it. The pockets exist, but nothing lives in them on purpose.
The fix is simple. Assign every pocket by how often you reach for what goes in it. Things you grab ten times a day go on the outside, up high, where one hand finds them. Things you pack once for a trip go inside. Things you never want exposed go against your back.
Once a pocket has a job, the bag starts doing the remembering for you. A pocket that is empty tells you something is missing before you leave the house.
The Thirteen Compartments, One by One
Here is where everything lives in the CARGO, in the order the video packs it.
- Top pocket. Phone and keys.
- NFC pocket. Key fob, behind the patch.
- Upper front pocket. Power bank and cable.
- Front pocket. Utensil kit.
- Internal front pocket. Portable drive.
- Right side pocket. Water bottle.
- Left side pocket. Flashlight.
- Bottom pocket. Blanket.
- Main compartment. The big one.
- Sanitary pocket. Grooming kit, inside the lid.
- Lid sleeve. Clothing and laptop.
- Secondary bay. Laptop, its own door.
- Hidden back pocket. Passport.
Eight of them sit outside for daily reach. The top pocket, the NFC pocket behind the patch, the upper front and front pockets, the internal front pocket, both side pockets, and the bottom pocket. The other five carry the trip itself. That means the main compartment, the sanitary pocket inside the lid, the lid sleeve, the secondary bay with its own door, and the hidden back pocket.
How to Pack a Backpack for Travel
Pack in this order and the bag carries better and opens faster at security.
-
Laptop First, Against Your BackThe heaviest, flattest item rides closest to your spine. The sleeve fits up to 17 inches, and the secondary bay takes a second device behind its own door.
-
Clothing in the Main CompartmentThe main compartment opens on a full clamshell zip, so it loads flat like a suitcase instead of top down like a sack. Roll or cube your clothes, then cinch the internal compression straps so nothing shifts.
-
Toiletries in the LidThe sanitary pocket inside the lid keeps a grooming kit apart from your clothes, and you can reach it without unpacking anything.
-
Daily Items Up Top and on the SidesPhone and keys in the top pocket. A water bottle in the right side pocket, a flashlight in the left. Power bank and cables in the upper front pocket.
-
Documents Where Only You Can ReachPassport in the hidden back pocket. Key fob in the NFC pocket behind the patch.
The rule behind every step is the same. Heavy goes close to your back, daily goes outside and up high, and private goes where only you can reach it.

Common Questions
How many compartments does the CARGO have?
Thirteen zippered compartments. Eight are on the outside for things you reach for during the day, and five are inside or against your back for the things you pack once.
Will a 17 inch laptop fit?
Yes. The primary laptop sleeve fits up to 17 inches. The secondary bay has its own door and also fits a 17 inch device when no armor plate is installed.
Is the CARGO waterproof?
The shell is 1680D ballistic polyester, PU backed, and water resistant. It sheds rain on a walk to the car, but it is not a dry bag, and a rain cover is not included.
What goes in the hidden back pocket?
A passport, or anything you never want to dig for in public. It sits against your back, behind the shoulder straps, where a hand cannot reach it while you wear the pack.
